Nothing says Australia quite like Vegemite and nothing goes together quite as nice as vegemite and cheese. If you’re after something a little fancier than Vegemite and cheese on toast then you must try these simple Vegemite and cheese scrolls. They’re quick, easy and the kids will love them. They also make awesome additions to a lunch box and can be eaten cold or warm. If you happen to be dairy intolerant then you can simply skip the cheese!

Why Simple Vegemite and Cheese Scrolls?

Simple Vegemite and Cheese scrolls get their name because no one is going to ask you to make your own puff pastry. Store bought pastry will achieve exactly the same outcome with a lot less stress and time than dusting down the bench and making your own. That said, if you happen to like cooking from scratch then feel free to knock yourself out and make your own puff pastry from scratch. I can assure you though, that a 5, 10 or 15 year old child will not know the difference and we like that you might just get to save some time that you can in turn spend with them. This recipe should literally take you no more than 5 minutes hard labour including the time it takes to add them to your shopping trolley!

What is Vegemite made from?

If you aren’t from Australia you might be wondering what all the fuss is about Vegemite. Vegemite is most definitely an iconic Australian sandwich spread and is (wait for it) a yeast extract! ok, so don’t get grossed out because yeast is also what helps to make bread and brew beer! After they add the left over brewers yeast, they mix it with some vegetable and spice additives to make the end resulting Vegemite. Vegemite was created in 1922 by Cyril P. Callister in Melbourne, Victoria.
